The Director of Recreation and Wellness is responsible for the administrative oversight of Recreation and Wellness and provides leadership and direction in support of the mission, vision, goals of the department and the Fitness and Aquatic Center (FAC). The director oversees all full-time administrators of the department, part-time student employees, coaches and instructors for the following programs: fitness, outdoor adventure, intramural and club sports, youth programs and all recreation facilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop department goals and objectives consistent with its mission and the mission of the Division of Student Development; initiate changes in order to develop new policies, procedures and/or methods based on interpretation of organization plans and forecasts. Analyze and evaluate ongoing department programs to identify areas where adjustments/improvements or cut backs are needed.
  • Set operational standards for all recreational facilities and programs to ensure operational and financial effectiveness. Evaluate workload, priorities and activity schedules to determine staffing requirements for events, programs and for the Fitness and Aquatic Center(FAC). Hire, schedule and evaluate administrator and staff performance, conducting performance appraisals and reviews on a regular schedule and more often when needed. Evaluate daily operational procedures and policies to ensure an efficient, safe and secure environment for those who are eligible to utilize the FAC. Analyze customer complaints, concerns and suggestions. Provide appropriate follow through to ensure highest level quality customer service related to programs, services and facilities maintenance and cleaning.
  • Develop and implement policy and procedures for the FAC including: eligibility for memberships, services, programs, scheduling and staff and student employee policies and procedures (club coaches, instructors, graduate assistants and student employees).
  • Establish and manage operational budgets for the Department of Recreational Sports and Fitness and Aquatic Center. Identify budget needs to maintain standards in the industry and to ensure shortfalls are forecasted and risk of injury or illness is minimized. Ensure all revenue budget expectations are met annually. Identify capital budget needs through advance planning.
  • Assists in the development of a vibrant student experience by collaborating with other Student Development departments such as Student Engagement, Student Life, ALANA (African, Latinx, Asian, and Native American) Services, Student Health Services, and the Counseling Center.
  • Develop co-sponsored programs and form strong partnerships with campus organizations, departments, and committees.
Required Qualifications
  • A Master�??s degree in Sports Management, Recreation Management, College Student Personnel, Higher Education, or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of related work experience.
  • Knowledge of policies, procedures, programs and strategies associated with administering a comprehensive recreation program; current trends in campus recreation programming; meeting quality standards for services and evaluation of customer satisfaction; recreational facility design, maintenance, successful management and operations; budget management; capital budget planning; equipment/supplies purchasing; computers and related software
  • Strong performance management experience; ability to make independent judgments and possess strong critical thinking skills, and ability to work appropriately with other departments, executive leadership and other University leaders.
  • Ability to support the University�??s goals for institutional diversity, as well as the goals and values of a Catholic, Jesuit institution.
